Cellular M2M Modules Shipments to See Steady Growth in the Near Future

It isn't too hard to predict that M2M module shipments are going to go up in the next couple of years, but it is nice to have solid numbers from an expert firm. Fortunately, the latest Strategy Analytics M2M Strategies report, “M2M Devices Annual Sales by Air Interface, Region by Industry Vertical,” provides just that.

Put simply, the report states that M2M module shipments will grow from 76 million in 2012 to 104 million in 2013.

This growth is likely to be fueled by legislation such as the European Energy Efficiency Directive and eCall, which will increase M2M use in areas such as smart metering and passenger vehicle crash protection, respectively. In fact, these regulation changes will ultimately have a very dramatic effect on the M2M market, driving growth to the point that the number of modules in operation will be over one billion by 2020.

“Annual module shipments tend to show relatively modest growth annually, given that the lifecycle of many M2M devices are far in excess of 5 years and that many trials to deployments happen in phases,” said Andrew Brown, director of M2M research at Strategy Analytics and author of the study. “Once an M2M module is deployed, it will remain in place for many years, which supports the growing emphasis on module software to link existing modules to connectivity (CDPs) and service platforms (SDPs).”

David Kerr, vice president of the Global Wireless Practice at Strategy Analytics went on to add that Smart Grid projects are ramping up in such regions as the U.S., China and Europe, but that delays in eCall and debate on how service delivery should occur, whether via embedded modules or smartphones, will limit short-term growth.

In other news, Strategy Analytics recently released another report which states that the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution provides the most secure mobile platform as well as the lowest cost of total ownership for mobile deployments.
