Beating Ford into second place and Toyota into third, General Motors has topped a new ranking of OEM safety and security telematics vendors. In a Competitive Assessment carried out by ABI Research, the company’s OnStar solution was ranked number one.
General Motors (Detroit, USA) was scored highly by ABI for its range of OnStar features, as well as its market share, quality and reliability. In terms of regional coverage, market share, pricing and smartphone integration, Ford (Detroit, USA) fared well, while Toyota (Aichi, Japan) performed strongly on open platforms and ecosystem partnerships.
“OnStar remains the leading safety and security telematics solution in the United States, offering the most complete range of safety and security features, including state of the art emergency calling, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle tracking, immobilization, and recovery,” said Dominique Bonte, an ABI VP and practice director.

ABI’s Competitive Assessment rated 10 well-known OEM safety and security telematics on 12 “innovation” and “implementation” criteria, and scored them on the basis of market share. Around the world, General Motors has 6.4 million telematics subscribers, giving it a market share of 24.6 percent.
However, questions remain when it comes to scalability of its proprietary technology and its premium business model.
Because of its free hybrid SYNC telematics solution, Ford scored highly on regional coverage. In North America, the solution is currently used in more than four million vehicles and offers E911 emergency calling and remote diagnostics.
Due to the dependence on phones, its main weakness is quality and reliability.
Since 2002, Toyota, which ABI describes as a “rising star,” has been offering its G-BOOK telematics service in Japan. But it recently launched telematics in the U.S. (Safety Connect) and China. It scores highly on open platforms and partnerships, as illustrated by its cooperation with Microsoft (Seattle, USA) to build a global next-generation platform based on Windows Azure cloud technology.
