Indian M2M Market Promises a Rapid Growth

A new study by CyberMedia Research (CMR) shows how the machine to machine (M2M) market in India is showing signs of a potential high growth in the near future

CyberMedia Research has been providing consulting services since 1986 in the IT, technology, infrastructure and healthcare sectors – especially in terms of market analysis. Its “India Wireless M2M Modules Market Review, 2011-2015” highlights how the M2M market has grown in India.

According to Anirban Banerjee, associate vice president of CyberMedia Research at the Research and Advisory Services department, the growth is due to the shift toward wireless technology required by monitoring and controlling devices remotely in important Indian industries such as the automotive, utilities and banking.

The report in fact identifies the needs for telematics as one of the causes for the M2M market growth, as well as the need to reduce human effort, the use of 3G and 4G technology, and the effort of mobile operators to increase their market share in those industries.

M2M communication is increasingly important nowadays because of the push toward automation and the need for devices to be “smarter” and therefore react to and interact with other devices around them. Smart automotive, intelligent homes and smart retail devices are all destined to be an essential part of the life of every consumer.

M2M communication works through modules that allow the transmission of information from one device to the other. The transmission can use different media, from short range frequencies to satellite or cellular technology. Short range modules are currently the leaders accounting for over 50 percent of the modules market revenue (as of 2011), but analysts like Faisal Kawoosa of CyberMedia Research believe the use of cellular technology will grow exponentially with the use of newer 3G and 4G technologies.

Industries like Automotive and Logistics that are major actors in India’s economy have many reasons to invest in M2M communication, and will definitely drive the push to new wireless means. Sectors like utilities, however, will soon contribute to the growth of the modules market with initiatives like the use of smart energy meters necessary for the government to monitor power supplies.

Major international vendors in the M2M module sector are already present in India to take advantage of the potentials of this market:  Sierra Wireless, Gemalto Telit and SimCom.  Others will likely soon follow.
