Consumer Electronics Devices Emerge, Offers M2M Growth

The machine-to-machine market (M2M) is known to be growing in the world, especially in cellular modules in M2M communications, as seen from the migration paths from 2G, to 3G to 4G chipsets.

There are also reports of the spread of other consumer electronics devices such as eReaders, digital photo frames and game consoles like the PS Vita, which will not only emerge as a key anchor for the M2M sector, but contribute to rising revenue.

It is normal, then, that revenue from products and services delivered over embedded consumer electronics devices is the object of many studies and reports these days. The purpose is to understand how positive the growth trends will be and which sectors of the M2M market are driving the growth.

One such study, conducted by Anthony Cox in his Juniper’s M2M & Embedded Strategies report, has identified in the sector of services and products which consumer electronics tend to be the fastest growing area in the M2M industry.

The sector is in fact supposed to be worth $6.4 billion by 2014. Not surprisingly, the growth is due especially to the market that involves eBook sales and subscriptions. Their sales, as well sales of newer and improved eReaders, are constantly growing after users have realized the convenience of access to millions of titles in an instant.

It is said that the savings that can be achieved by downloading books instead of buying the print edition offered over cellular connected consumer electronics devices, and the savings derived by eBook subscription programs, as well as the ease of being able to transport hundreds of books in their digital form, makes it ideal for users everywhere they go.

The new 4G chipsets, still at an early distribution stage, will soon help the growth. They not only allow better cellular connectivity for the consumer electronic devices, but will find use also in other sectors, like the automotive sector, where the ability to connect with and react to other machines information is growing in value.

New 4G chipsets will also help in live video monitoring devices.

The spreading of 4G chipsets might even make 3G chipsets more affordable, contributing, then, to their wider use in all sectors (consumer electronics and automotive included). In fact, the growth of M2M and embedded devices is estimated to go from the current 130 million unites to almost half a billion in 2017.
