The machine to machine (M2M) space is growing fast, and it reaches out into a broad range of verticals. One market leader in the M2M space is Sierra Wireless. I recently sat down with Olivier Beaujard, vice president of market development at Sierra to discuss the highlights of 2012 and to look forward and see what we can expect in 2013.
In terms of market trends, Beaujard felt that 2012 represented a year in which wireless connectivity expanded to all vertical markets, creating a demand for viable M2M solutions and driving the need for developer tools and network management platforms. He saw the auto industry as one of the biggest areas of opportunity for his company, citing European legislation requiring eCall capabilities in vehicles by 2015.
The biggest news for his company this year, according to Beaujard, was its acquisition of Sagemcom, which added to the breadth of Sierra’s product portfolio, allowing it to secure its market position. The company also launched the AirVantage M2M Cloud, which allows M2M solutions to be rolled out faster than ever before.
Looking into his crystal ball, Beaujard made some predictions for 2013.
First he spoke of Sierra Wireless’ intention to continue to drive the evolution of technology as the world moves toward the “Internet of things.” He fully expects Sierra to play a large part in this process. As for the overall industry, Beaujard foresees a larger demand for streamlined M2M solutions in areas such as smart metering and connected homes, though he still sees the automotive market as the biggest driver of change. In the automotive space, he sees safety solutions as one of the biggest areas for potential growth as well as location-aware applications and infotainment. Overall, he feels that companies will seek out M2M solutions that will minimize total cost of ownership while increasing customer service.
