Audi Teams with Gemalto on 4G LTE M2M Connections

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology is always evolving to meet the needs of its users. What once was primarily being used in home security systems now seems to be used more and more in various automotive technologies. Gemalto is one company that has managed to sharpen its security M2M tech, Cinterion, to work in the automotive industry. More specifically, this new tech works to bring 4G connections to Audi’s LTE driven “Infotainment” system.

Audi has been trying to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to automotive technology. One step in that direction has been their adoption of self-driving cars. While those self-driving cars are still a few years in the future, the ability to add 4G LTE connectivity to cars is a tech that is available now.

The choices seem almost endless when talking about what can be done using a 4G LTE connection. Both drivers and passengers can take advantage of a network connection in order to actually connect to the Internet, or use an Internet connected radio like Pandora. There are also those who believe that this kind of connectivity will allow for even better GPS connections and guidance.

The Gemalto-enabled Audi Connect will give users the best of the 4G LTE world by giving them advanced GPS connections as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot that will allow as many as eight users onto a network at the same time. The connectivity is maximized so that when the car is in an area where 4G networks are not available, users won’t see a dramatic drop in functionality.

“We’ve relied on Gemalto’s market-leading Cinterion products for its unrivaled expertise and highest quality for more than a decade, helping Audi deliver next-generation services to our discerning drivers and realize the promise of a truly ‘connected car,'” said Ricky Hudi, Chief Executive Engineer of Electrics/Electronics, AUDI AG.

“Gemalto’s scalable automotive M2M solution allows us to seamlessly and quickly migrate from 3G to LTE, delivering a faster, more dynamic product that embodies our leadership through innovation.”
